Candlelight Club Holiday Edition: Public Art in Oakland

  • East Bay Community Space 507 55th Street Oakland, CA, 94609 United States (map)

ABOUT THE CANDLELIGHT CLUB
The Candlelight Club ("2nd Monday's") is a new monthly tradition, where we gather some of the most compelling personalities from Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco together to break bread (gluten-free options available), have a glass of wine, and experience riveting live performances together. "The next Buddha is the sangha", as they say. Come mingle with old and new friends.

We will reach capacity, so kindly reserve your spot on Eventbrite if you know you'd like to join us. The secret password is "mistletoe".

The formula is simple: drinks at 7:30pm, dinner at 8:00pm, and the performance at 9:00pm.

The Candlelight Club ("CC") is a by-invite dinner event for "artist-centric" (not "audience-centric") performance, around sometimes challenging, controversial or enlightening (and often thrilling) themes. CC is also an affordable date, a potluck dinner with new and old friends, in a sexy, fun, engaging atmosphere. The crowd is eclectic, extremely warm and generous, and passionately curious. Everyone either brings a dish or a drink, or both--and shares what they're bringing on the Facebook Event Page (muy importante for the planners!). It's a co-created, non-profit (but we pay musicians and performers because we deeply value what they do) community event. We limit participation to the 100 who sign up first because we're committed to an intimate, conversational atmosphere. Friends of The Candlelight Club may request additional invites from the organizers (Kevin and Luke), but we ask that you inquire before inviting others. Thank you!

THEME: THE ROLE OF PUBLIC ART IN OAKLAND
We love our muralists! Oakland's creative community is what makes it so vibrant. Oakland’s outdoor art-scape surprises, engages and inspires us. We’ll discuss diverse examples of art all along Oakland’s historic Downtown/Uptown corridor, and discuss the role of art in urban streetscapes.

RICHARD MURUTAR - CEO, SPRAYPRINTER
You're going to want to meet Richard, and it's not just because it's the holiday season and Estonians sound like kindly elves when they speak.

Richard is an Estonian tech entrepreneur with a mission to "connect your creativity with boring walls". Last Spring, he crashed the world-famous "Launch Festival" in San Francisco with an entryway demo that left people gobsmacked. What is a SprayPrinter device? How do artists transfer images from their smartphones onto city walls in Oakland, San Jose, and San Francisco? What does the emerging Sprayprinter community mean for public art? More details here:

It's a magical piece of hardware, and unlike anything you've seen before.

JOHN MORGAN - MADHATTER PIANO GENIUS OF MARKET STREET
"Market Street is their concert hall. The clanging streetcars their backup singers. Several times a week, John Morgan hoists his upright Craigslist freebie piano into the back of their 20-year-old Jeep, and drives from his West Oakland brick warehouse where he splits the rent on an unheated room to play for tips on Market Street and Union Square."

John Morgan is doing incredible solo work right now, including an experimental black metal album that caught delighted fans and confounded critics. He's going to share his gifts with us and we're going to help him buy his piano. More details here:

VENUE & LOGISTICS
East Bay Community - 507 55th Street (at Telegraph), Oakland, CA 94609

The East Bay Community Space is located at the corner of Telegraph Avenue and 55th Street in the Upper Temescal District of Oakland. The building was once the location of the venerable Leo’s Audio Store, and also briefly housed Leo’s Night Club. There is some on-street parking in the Temescal neighborhood. Candlelight Clubbers using public transportation are a short jaunt (1.1 miles) from MacArthur BART stop and Lyft's are plentiful.

FOOD & DRINK - BRING SOMETHING!
There are plenty of serving dishes and a prep kitchen at the venue, but please bring mostly prepared food offerings. We will also have ~2 basic dishes (tamales from our favorite West Oakland grandmother, etc.) as a producer offering, along with beer, wine and kombucha. Please specify the dish or drink you'll bring on the Facebook event page. If you can't bring a dish, still come! Bring a bottle of wine or some egg nog.
